Granada is at the heart of The Andalusia region of Spain, and is a magnet for artisans, flamenco performers and also home to one of the world’s most beautiful (and UNESCO heritage listed) palaces, The Alhambra, a standing reminder of a regal Moorish past.
I have visited Spain on several occasions but a recent trip to this area was a first, and wow! It’s an incredibly stimulating and inspiring travel experience and Granada is definitely my soul city. Within the first hour of arriving I attended my first-of-four Flamenco dance classes.
Flamenco is the soul rhythm of local life. Upbeat, passionate and beautiful all at once. Just like the people. Maria Ruiz Ortiz is one of this city’s best Flamenco performers. She shares with us her heartfelt love as a professional Flamenco dancer and teacher. Dance is a universal language but Flamenco has to be the most spirited one.
WHERE ARE YOU FROM ORIGINALLY AND WHERE DO YOU LIVE NOW?
I am from Malaga but I now live and teach in Granada.
‘FLAMENCO’ IS ADORED WORLDWIDE AS THE RHYTHM OF SPANISH LIFE. WHAT IS ‘FLAMENCO’, WHERE DOES IT ORIGINATE AND HOW IMPORTANT IS IT TO SPANISH PEOPLE?
Flamenco is our music, our heritage, our way of life. It is an integral part of Spanish culture, particularly to the Andalusia region, which is where I am from and why I was inspired to dance from a young age.
AS A FLAMENCO DANCER AND TEACHER, WHAT DOES ‘FLAMENCO’ MEAN TO YOU?
Flamenco is a celebration of our cultural past and comes from the miscegenation of different racial influences, originating from a time when Spain was under Arabic rule from 711 AD.
DANCE IS AN ART FORM. CHARACTER DANCE IS AN ARTISTIC EXPRESSION TO REPRESENT A COUNTRY OR CULTURE. WHAT IS IT ABOUT ‘FLAMENCO’ THAT MAKES IT SO UNIQUE TO SPAIN?
Flamenco is important to the Spanish people because it is our own style of music. Flamenco is a combination of music, song and dance that is now revered with shows performed around the world. Flamenco dance is very technical but there is a richness of movements due to the naturalness and freedom of expression that makes this dance very unique. Dancers perform with their own emotion, energy and style, exuding a lot of strength and personal feelings. (Note from the curator: The time signature of Flamenco is typically 12 beats to a bar which creates a faster tempo to work with. Just watch the guitar strings and incredible foot work.)
TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR DANCE HISTORY. WHEN DID YOU START? WHY DO YOU DO FLAMENCO AND WHO TAUGHT YOU?
Flamenco for me is everything, It's my way of walking, breathing, living, It’s my way of being able to express myself without having to say a word. Flamenco is my life!
I started learning Flamenco when I was three years old. My mother signed me up to an academy for several reasons. I was dancing my way around all the time and also because of my shyness. I was sent to a local dance academy and that’s where everything started. Then my family signed me up at the Professional Dance Conservatory of Málaga, where I studied dance and choreography with most of the best teachers in the world of Flamenco.
DO YOU THINK FLAMENCO IS STILL AN IMPORTANT PART OF SPANISH TRADITION?
Flamenco is and will always remain an important part of our country because it is our way of life. It has been part of our culture from the very beginning and will always be recognised as a Spanish style of expression.
THERE IS A LOT OF TECHNIQUE AND EMOTION IN FLAMENCO STYLE DANCE. CAN ANYONE LEARN ‘FLAMENCO’?
Of course everyone with discipline and perseverance can learn Flamenco, though it is true that if you are born or are surrounded by Flamenco then it is easier to learn. And it is always better to start small, but in saying this, that does not mean that anyone with perseverance and effort will ‘get’ it. It’s a very passionate style of expression with a lot of emotions that comes from within. The more life experiences, the more emotion can come from within.
WHAT MAKES A GOOD DANCER? WHAT’S THE BEST TIP YOU CAN PROVIDE FOR BEGINNERS?
My advice is that I studied a lot! But it is the music or song that is the first thing a dancer must learn. Watching and listening to videos is probably the best way to really understand Flamenco before learning technique and choreography. And there is very disciplined technique even though there is a sense of freedom with Flamenco dance.

La región Andalusia de España es una fiesta cultural con su rica historia de dominio árabe muy evidente en la arquitectura, la comida, el estilo de vida y el Flamenco. Granada está en el corazón y es un imán para los artesanos, los artistas de flamenco y también el hogar de uno de los palacios más bellos del mundo (y declarado patrimonio de la humanidad por la UNESCO), La Alhambra. Un recordatorio permanente de un pasado morisco real.
He visitado España en varias ocasiones, pero un viaje reciente a esta área fue el primero, ¡y guau! Es una experiencia de viaje increíblemente estimulante e inspiradora y Granada es definitivamente mi ciudad del alma. A la primera hora de mi llegada, asistí a mis primeras cuatro clases de baile Flamenco. El Flamenco es el ritmo del alma de la vida local. Optimista, apasionada y hermosa a la vez. Al igual que la gente. María Ruiz Ortiz es una de las mejores intérpretes de Flamenco de esta ciudad. Ella comparte su sincero amor como bailarina y profesora de Flamenco profesional. La danza es un lenguaje universal pero el Flamenco tiene que ser el más animado.
¿De dónde estás originalmente y de donde vives ahora?
Soy de Málaga pero ahora vivo y doy clases en Granada.
El flamenco es adorado en todo el mundo como el ritmo de la vida española. ¿Qué es ‘Flamenco’, dónde se origina y cuán importante es para el pueblo Español?
El Flamenco es nuestra música, nuestro patrimonio, nuestra forma de vida. Es una parte integral de la cultura Española, particularmente de la región de Andalucía, que es de donde soy y por eso me inspiró a bailar desde una edad temprana.
Como bailarina y profesora de Flamenco, ¿qué significa para ti el Flamenco?
El Flamenco es una celebración de nuestro pasado cultural y proviene del mestizaje de diferentes influencias raciales, originadas en un momento en que España estaba bajo el dominio árabe desde el 711 AD.
La danza es una forma de arte. El baile del personaje es una expresión artística para representar un país o una cultura. ¿Qué es lo que se trata del ‘Flamenco’ que lo hace tan único en España?
El flamenco es importante para los españoles porque es nuestro propio estilo de música. El Flamenco es una combinación de música, canción y danza que ahora es venerada con espectáculos realizados en todo el mundo. El baile Flamenco es muy técnico, pero hay una gran cantidad de movimientos debido a la naturalidad y la libertad de expresión que hacen que este baile sea único. Los bailarines actúan con su propia emoción, energía y estilo, exudando mucha fuerza y sentimientos personales. (Nota del curador: la marca de tiempo de Flamenco es generalmente de 12 tiempos en un compás que crea un ritmo más rápido para trabajar. Solo mire las cuerdas de la guitarra y el increíble trabajo de los pies.)
Cuéntanos un poco sobre tu historia del baile. ¿Cuando empezaste? ¿Por qué haces Flamenco y quién te enseñó?
El flamenco para mí lo es todo, es mi manera de caminar, respirar, vivir, es mi manera de expresarme sin tener que decir una palabra. ¡El Flamenco es mi vida! empecé a aprender Flamenco cuando tenía 3 años. Mi madre me inscribió en una academia por varias razones. Estaba bailando a mi alrededor todo el tiempo y también por mi timidez. Me enviaron a una academia de baile local y ahí es donde empezó todo. Entonces mi familia me inscribió en el Conservatorio Profesional de Danza de Málaga, donde estudié danza y coreografía con la mayoría de los mejores maestros del mundo del Flamenco.
¿Crees que el Flamenco sigue siendo una parte importante de la tradición Española?
El Flamenco es y seguirá siendo una parte importante de nuestro país porque es nuestra forma de vida. Ha sido parte de nuestra cultura desde el principio y siempre será reconocido como un estilo de expresión español.
Hay mucha técnica y emoción en el baile de estilo Flamenco. ¿Alguien puede aprendar ‘Flamenco’?
Por supuesto, todos los que tienen disciplina y perseverancia pueden aprender Flamenco, aunque es cierto que si uno nace o está rodeado de flamenco, entonces es más fácil aprender. Y siempre es mejor comenzar poco a poco, pero al decir esto, eso no significa que cualquier persona con perseverancia y esfuerzo lo "obtendrá". Es un estilo de expresión muy apasionado con muchas emociones que vienen de dentro. Mientras más experiencias de vida, más emoción puede venir desde adentro.
¿Qué hace un buen bailarín? ¿Cuál es el mejor consejo que puede proporcionar a los principiantes?
Mi consejo es que estudié mucho! Pero es la música o canción lo primero que debe aprender un bailarín. Ver y escuchar videos es probablemente la mejor manera de entender realmente el flamenco antes de aprender la técnica y la coreografía. Y hay una técnica muy disciplinada, aunque hay un sentido de libertad con el baile Flamenco.
